How crucial is public understanding of science?

It's not necessary for everyone to understand science. Most people do just fine without it, or with a limited or specialized knowledge of it. I don't care if my mechanic is a creationist, so long as he understands how to fix my car. Likewise, Richard Dawkins may be a knowledgeable evolutionary biologist, but he probably can't rebuild a transmission.
