Why is my adult cat eating her litter?

She doesn't use the litter anymore but I found her munching away at it the other day. Then she was just lying in her basket for two days looking very out of sorts. Today I found vomit near her basket, mostly consisting of cat litter and a tiny amount of cat food. Why is she eating her litter and how do I stop her from doing this?
