If the "Public Option" will put private medicine out of business, how come it still thrives in Canada & the UK?

Both Canada & the UK (and Australia, too) have "Nationalized Healthcare" with parallel private options for those who hate to queue and can afford not to wait....all three nations have longer life expectancies than the US, too...isn't that odd?
